Application: Rationale and Procedure
Note: The Application Assignment is due by Day 3, prior to the Discussion.
Most professional organizations undergo change at some point, and criminal justice organizations are no different. The impetus for change may come from internal (e.g., political pressure within a criminal justice organization) or external (e.g., increased unemployment rates within a city) forces and for a variety of reasons. Perhaps a new head of an organization such as a warden or commissioner observes a need for internal change from within the organization. Alternatively, new legislation might be the external force behind changes in criminal justice organizations Organizational change may impact only one or many divisions of an organization. Developing a process for organizational change and adopting a set plan to implement it are key elements in executing successful organizational change.
To prepare for this assignment:
- Review the Chapter 14 presentation and Chapter 14 in your course text, Criminal Justice Organizations: Administration and Management. Pay attention to procedures for organizational or planned change.
- Think about the purpose or rationale for organizational change.
- Consider steps that criminal justice managers might use to implement organizational change.
The assignment (1–2 pages):
- Explain two reasons (or rationales) why criminal justice organizations might undergo change.
- Explain two steps that criminal justice managers might take to implement organizational change based on the reasons you chose.
