The History, Concept, and Definition of Advanced Practice NursingA graduate education in nursing fosters independent thought, critical thinking, and the ability to analyze large amounts of information. Nurses educated at the graduate level are required to utilize the increasing complexity and volume of evidenced based information and research. Graduate prepared nurses have the opportunity to manage increasingly complex healthcare systems, facilitate the learning experiences of nursing students, and advance knowledge in the discipline through evidence-based care and research.Nurses with a Master’s degree use expanded knowledge and skills to provide care for patients, families, groups, and communities. Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, according to a guiding document titled the “Consensus Model” include nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, nurse anesthetists, and clinical nurse specialists. Advanced Practice Registered Nurses assess, diagnose, and treat acute and chronic medical conditions, and provide interventions for health promotion. Other nurses with Master’s degrees, while not considered “advanced practice” according to licensing boards, assume expanded practice roles.
