Assignment Instructions/ Description
Midterm: Preliminary Poster Assignment
PurposeThe purpose of this assignment is to prepare students for a rough draft of the poster they will be developing for the final research project. Assignment Requirements Students will generate arough draft of a research poster that will be used to reflect the research study they conduct over the term. This rough draft is worth 90 total points or 18.4% of the final grade. General best practices for research posters are to use as few words as possible while maximizing the use of tables and visualizations. Focus on conciseness, factual reporting, and scientific approaches to your language. Like with papers written from an academic perspective, your poster will:
a. Be written from a third person, not first-person perspective.b. Will not use slang or turns of phrase.c. Avoid the use of first-person pronouns (I) and most second person pronouns (we, you).d. Not use personal stories or anecdotal evidence, but rather, use research and scientific evidence to argue and defend claims.
AssignmentStepsStep 1: Choose a poster template. Choose one of the three poster templates included with this assignment on Canvas. All poster templates are 4ft wide and 3ft tall for the purposes of printing. ONLY USE THE PROVIDED TEMPLATES FOR THIS POSTER PROJECT. Using anything but the provided templates will result in a poster that cannot be printed. Step 2: Design your poster Choose colors, designs, and font for your poster. Make your poster your own and be creative. In general, avoid fonts and colors that are overly whimsical or could detract from the importance of your research project. In general, choosing the colors of the university you represent, or that is related to your research project,is considered standard practice. For example, if you are researching breast cancer you might use a pink background and use pink ribbons as bullet points. Research on LGBTQQ populations might warrant using a rainbow theme. Make sure that your color choices do not distract from the clarity of information you are reporting. Ensuring that the poster is strong at communicating study findings should be your primary design goals. Make sure that you have a Title, Headings, Author Information, and School Affiliation clearly defined on the poster.Step 3:Enter preliminary information on the poster that includes, in the appropriate sections, the following:1. An introduction to your topic. 2. Purpose of the research study, what you are examining.3. An explanation of the data you are using for this research.4. Preliminary demographics on your data including a table or chart that communicates the distribution of gender, age, race/ ethnicity, and other pertinent demographic variables. Choose about 3-5 variables to relay about the subjects included in your population.
Note: There are many areas of this poster that we are not going to work on until later in the semester. The four sections you are working on are the: Introduction, Study Purpose, Methods and Data section, and the Demographics. You will leave space for the other poster sections but not put content into those areas until I teach you how to complete them later in the semester.
