Preliminary Poster Assignment
Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to prepare students for a rough draft of the poster theywill be developing for the final research project.
Assignment Requirements
Students will generate a rough draft of a research poster that will be used to reflect theresearch study they conduct over the term. This rough draft is worth 90 total points or 18.4% ofthe final grade.General best practices for research posters are to use as few words as possible whilemaximizing the use of tables and visualizations. Focus on conciseness, factual reporting, andscientific approaches to your language. Like with papers written from an academic perspective,your poster will:a. Be written from a third person, not first-person perspective.b. Will not use slang or turns of phrase.c. Avoid the use of first-person pronouns (I) and most second person pronouns (we, you).d. Not use personal stories or anecdotal evidence, but rather, use research and scientificevidence to argue and defend claims.
Assignment Steps
Step 1: Choose a poster template.Choose one of the three poster templates included with this assignment on Canvas. Allposter templates are 4ft wide and 3ft tall for the purposes of printing. ONLY USE THEPROVIDED TEMPLATES FOR THIS POSTER PROJECT. Using anything but the providedtemplates will result in a poster that cannot be printed.Step 2: Design your posterChoose colors, designs, and font for your poster. Make your poster your own and becreative. In general, avoid fonts and colors that are overly whimsical or could detract from theimportance of your research project. In general, choosing the colors of the university yourepresent, or that is related to your research project, is considered standard practice. Forexample, if you are researching breast cancer you might use a pink background and use pinkribbons as bullet points. Research on LGBTQQ populations might warrant using a rainbowtheme. Make sure that your color choices do not distract from the clarity of information you arereporting. Ensuring that the poster is strong at communicating study findings should be yourprimary design goals.Make sure that you have a Title, Headings, Author Information, and School Affiliationclearly defined on the poster.Step 3: Enter preliminary information on the poster that includes, in the appropriate sections, thefollowing:
1. An introduction to your topic.2. Purpose of the research study, what you are examining.3. An explanation of the data you are using for this research.4. Preliminary demographics on your data including a table or chart that communicates thedistribution of gender, age, race/ ethnicity, and other pertinent demographic variables. Chooseabout 3-5 variables to relay about the subjects included in your population.
