Assignment Instructions/ Description
Paper #1: Everyday Toxicants Log & Reflective Analysis
On 1/21 by 9:00 am, submit your Everyday Toxicants Log & Reflective Analysis via Gradecraft. Some students will have shorter or longer logs than others, and it would be typical to have at least 8-12 products listed. All students’ logs should be accompanied by an approximately 2-3-page (double-spaced, 11-point font, 1-inch margins) reflective analysis. The purpose of this assignment is twofold: 1) to identify the ways that toxicants are ubiquitous in our everyday lives; and 2) to begin to assess and reflect on our own potential exposure to toxicants, particularly those associated with adverse effects on human health. Toxicants are chemicals, typically poisonous at a given level, which are made by humans or put into the environment by human activity.
Part 1: The Log: Select a day where you will track many of the toxicants you encounter. Consider those chemicals you breathe in (e.g., vehicle exhaust, VOCs in a newly painted room), you put on your body (i.e., skin, hair), you sit on (e.g., flame retardants), and ingest or drink (e.g., processed or synthetic food ingredients, pesticides). In some instances, you will have to make educated guesses. For instance, you may not know if the apple you ate had pesticides on it and, if so, which kind(s). Try your best. Don’t overwhelm yourself, but attempt to get a comprehensive snapshot of your daily exposure. You can Google for additional insights for your ‘Notes’ section and reflect on the credibility of online information in your reflective analysis. Sample entries may look like this:
