Assignment Instructions/ Description
For those who are unable to attend the tour, an alternative assignment is available, which comprises 150 points of your grade. On 2/21 by 9:30am on Gradecraft students will be required to submit a 6-8-page research paper (double-spaced, 11 or 12 point font, 1-inch margins, inclusive of citations). You should identify one major source of environmental pollution (air, water, or soil) in Metropolitan Detroit to research and analyze. Some examples include:
Detroit Renewable Energy (a.k.a. the Detroit Incinerator) Zug Island and surrounding industry Detroit’s petroleum coke piles Ambassador Bridge and related mobile sources Detroit Wastewater Treatment PlantIn this paper, you should show how course concepts translate in the context of real world environmental health issues by doing the following:
1) Describe the purpose of the site or facility, acknowledging its social, environmental, and economic benefits and burdens to society.
2) Research and summarize relevant environmental epidemiology or toxicology studies. These do not have to be studies based in Detroit. For instance, if studying the Ambassador Bridge, you may wish to report on the relationship between diesel exhaust and health, in general. If you are examining the Detroit Wastewater Treatment Plant, you may report on the relationship between wastewater discharge, water pollution, and health. There may or may not be studies that have been conducted on these issues in the community you are specifically examining.
3) Describe key environmental health and justice issue(s) related to this pollution source in the context of Metro Detroit. You may need to use popular literature, rather than scholarly literature to understand how these issues manifest locally.
4) Finally, discuss research that may be needed and/or possible solutions, such land use, policy, or programmatic interventions that may be effective at reducing adverse environmental effects on health.
For Option 3, you will be graded on the following criteria: 1) clear, organized, and engaged writing; 2) well researched arguments, citing at least 5 credible sources using a professional format (e.g., APA, MLA); and 3) your effectiveness at addressing the above prompts. If you have never written a formal research paper or cited peer-reviewed literature, please schedule an appointment with a librarian well before the due date so that we can make sure you have the support you need.
