Instructions: This assignment will require both short answers and information that is produced with SPSS or other statistical software. You may, at your discretion, provide a rationale for your responses to the items.
1. Examine the measures (surveys, observations, interviews, data collection tools, etc.) used for the dependent variables in your chosen research paper. Review the reliabilities for each. What measure(s) would you recommend? Why? What measure(s) would you have concerns about? Why? (10 points)
2. What is the specific research design employed in your chosen research paper? Be specific (e.g., simply saying non-experimental, quasi-experimental, or experimental is not enough) (10 points)
PADM 580Assignment 2
3. What are all the strengths and all the weaknesses related to the internal validity of the research design in the research paper you have chosen? (10 points)
a. Strengths (5 points)
b. Weaknesses (5 points)
4. What are all the strengths and all the weaknesses related to the external validity of the research design in research design in the research paper you have chosen?. (10 points)
a. Strengths (5 points)
b. Weaknesses (5 points)
PADM 580Assignment 2
5. A research project is being conducted to determine the effect of a pre-school science and math curriculum on the development of later arithmetic and science achievement among children from low income families. Teachers are generally expected to develop both an appreciation for the value of science in the preschool classroom and the capacity to use science materials in the classroom. They will be assessed both before and after curriculum training to determine whether or not they are applying what they learned. What might be the most effective data collection method(s) to use to gather information about how well the teachers who are trained use the curriculum in their classroom work? Please explain. (10 points)
6. The Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) is investigating outcome measures for use in programs for persons with substance use difficulties. One of the measures is the Individual Assessment Profile. Several studies have been conducted on the instrument, and reliability estimates for items, using internal consistency (alpha), ranged from point seven, zero to point nine, nine. A second instrument is the Recovery Attitude and Treatment Evaluation (RAATE). Internal consistency reliabilities (alpha) ranged from point six, three to point seven, eight. The Texas Christian University Client Evaluation of Self and Treatment is the third instrument under investigation. Internal consistency reliabilities (alpha) range from point five, eight to point nine, six. What measure(s) would you recommend? Why? What measure(s) would you have concerns about? Why? (10 points)
PADM 580Assignment 2
7. If we wished to measure the impact of a natural disaster, such as Hurricane Katrina for example, what is the likely research design we would use? Why? (Be specific. Simply saying non-experimental, quasi-experimental, or experimental will not suffice.) (10 points)
8. A researcher is interested in a national healthcare policy called Certificate of Need. It mandates that before a hospital can be built, it must establish that a need occurs that cannot be addressed by the current hospital system. She decides to compare two states and how their implementation of Certificate of Need affects the quality of the hospital systems in the respective states. She gathers assessments of hospital quality prior to the implementation of the policy and again after one year of the policy. What is the likely research design that she is employing? Why?(10 points)
9. An educational researcher is interested in examining the effectiveness of a new mathematics curriculum. He chooses two fifth grade classrooms in a local school district. One of the classrooms will get the new curriculum and the other classroom will get the current curriculum. The researcher collects information about mathematics ability prior to implementation and again at the end of one year. He also gathers information about language arts levels and social science levels. What is the likely research design that she is employing? Why?(10 points)
10. Take your time to think this through. Consider sampling strategy (e.g., probability, non-probability) and research design (e.g., non-experimental, quasi-experimental, experimental). Which of these has the most impact on internal validity, and which has the most impact on external validity? That is, does sampling strategy have the greatest effect on internal validity or external validity? Does research design have the greatest effect on internal validity or external validity? Please explain your answer. (10 points)
