Discussion - Week 2
CRJS-4401-1,Mgmt & Admin in Crim Just Orgs.2018 Winter Qtr 11/26-02/17-PT5COLLAPSEMotivation and Criminal Justice Employees
In any field, including criminal justice, a multitude of factors motivate employees. Motivation can be intrinsic (e.g., desire to excel, enjoyment) or extrinsic (e.g., salary increase, public recognition). In the readings this week, you will examine theories of motivation that will help you understand the motivation of criminal justice employees. As you read, keep in mind that there is no single theory of motivation that accounts for the all of the variations of employee motivation. Rather, employee motivation is best accounted for by a combination of different theories.
To prepare for this Discussion:
Review the Chapter 5 presentation and Chapter 5 in the course text, Criminal Justice Organizations: Administration and Management. Focus on various theories of motivation.
Consider how theories of motivation account for the motivation of criminal justice employees.
Review the video Public Safety, Law, and Security. Consider the different roles within the criminal justice system.
Select a criminal justice role (example: police officer, prosecutor, warden, etc.) in which you are interested.
If you assumed the role you selected, consider what would motivate you.
Think about how the theories you read about this week might account for your motivation in the role. With these thoughts in mind:
Post by Day 4 a brief description of the criminal justice role you selected. Then describe at least two theories that you think would best account for your motivation in the role. Be specific and use examples to support your explanation.
Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.
Read a selection of your colleagues' postings.
Respond by Day 6 to at least one of your colleagues who chose a different theory. Respond in one or more of the following ways:
Ask a probing question.
Share an insight from having read your colleague's posting.
Offer and support an opinion.
Validate an idea with your own experience.
Make a suggestion.
Expand on your colleague's posting.Return to this Discussion in a few days to read the responses to your initial posting. Note what you have learned and/or any insights you have gained as a result of your colleagues' comments.
