Assignment Instructions/ Description
Part 2: Reflective Analysis: Accompanying your log, you should include an approximately 2-3-page reflective analysis (double-spaced, 11-point font, 1-inch margins). While this is not a traditional paper, your writing should be edited and clear with appropriate organization for your reader to follow your main ideas. You should use the headers below to separate your writing into two sections. You should include overarching introductory and conclusion paragraphs.
General Reflection (~1-1.5 pages)First, you should reflect generally on the following prompts:
What did you learn in the process about your exposure to toxicants? Are there any toxicants you would like to eliminate or reduce your exposure to either through your own behavior changes or federal policy changes? Are there any exposures that you think are relatively harmless? Are there other factors that influence your personal exposures? For instance, do you eat different foods on the weekend or have a different self-care regimen certain days.Understanding Risk of Toxicant ‘X’ (~1-1.5 pages)Second, pick 1 of the toxicants in your log and attempt to research the health risks associated with it. Write about what you learn and consider some of the following prompts:
Is there any information available about this toxicant? Can you find credible resources to help you understand its potential health risks? What do you learn from a brief Google search? Can you identify its chemical composition? If so, do you find it when searching the CDC’s Agency forToxic Substances and Disease Registry’s Tox Profiles?
How would you characterize the risk associated with this toxicant? If you can’t find any information, discuss the research you did and why you think that may be.Your grade will be based on your attempt to track your exposures as best as possible, as well as a thoughtful, professionally prepared reflective analysis that shows critical thinking.
NOTE: You will NOT be judged for the products you consume or use. If there are any specific products, medicines, etc. that would make you uncomfortable to share, please leave them off of your log. Also, this assignment is not meant to panic you if this is the first time you have researched any of these toxicants in your daily life. This assignment does not call for a thorough evidence-based analysis of all toxicants you list, which would give you a better sense of dose-response and overall hazard risk.
