Playground Observation
Observe the playground at your local school or daycare center.
You may need to obtain permission from the school/daycare facility in order to observe their playground.
Record the following from your observation:
Describe the playground.
List the Rules that are posted/ reinforced in the playgroundDiscuss Playground Safety. Explain how the playground is set (fenced, distant from street etc.)Discuss playground equipment (swings, slides, monkey bars, etc.). Refer to the Checklists in the book, the information in chapter 7, Table 7-5 (General Guidelines for Purchasing Outdoor Play Equipment) and Teacher Checklist 8-1 (Guidelines for Safe Use of Play Equipment).Discuss Floor Covering (advantages/disadvantages). Refer to Table 7-4 in Textbook.
Describe children’s activities in the playground.Refer to the physical education material covered and the readings. Record the activities that the children are doing. Relate your observation to the following (infer on how each activity is helpful for development):Bone-Strengthening activitiesMuscle-Strengthening activitiesAerobic Activities (cardiorespiratory endurance)Gross Motor Skills: the abilities required in order to control the large muscles of the body for walking, running, sitting and crawling.Fine Motor Skills: the skills that involve controlling the fingers, hands, and arms; require deliberate and controlled movements from both muscle development and maturation of the central nervous system.
