5. In management, how important is it to learn to use mathematics to solve problems? How valuable is an MBA degree without the ability to identify and calculate the cost of a company’s capital, its return on investment, gross margin percentage, break-even point, or what percent of a population would be willing to buy its product?
6. Math is more than manipulating numbers. Math is all about gathering information and solving problems. You have a problem you don't know the answer to but you see something about the problem that you do know. You put that down and it leads to something else you know and so on. And the process goes on until hopefully the problem is solved! Problems in everyday life or more importantly in the business world can be solved many times in a similar manner. Real life and math both can use this same process.
7. As we move into our first week we know from experience that some students aren't too good at math. But there definitely is a reason we have to take so much math in school. Most students think it's some sort of punishment. Actually it can help in decision making. Arithmetic skills seem somewhat outdated in this electronic age. Let's just hope you don't push the wrong button on your calculator. As you move along in math through algebra, geometry, calculus you begin to realize there is a certain analytical way of thinking involved that can be applied to solving all kinds of problems. You learn to gather information that you know and put it together to solve the bigger problem. Can you see the value of this in the business world?
8. Describe the one or two points that were least clear about applying percentages and decimals and converting percentages to decimal number in Microsoft excel. What questions do you have that would help you understand these points better?
