Assignment Instructions/ Description
Week 1: Critical Thinking and Set TheoryYou have opportunities on a daily basis to apply mathematical reasoning. Whether it's choosing the most efficient order in which to run errands, doing a quick mental check to ensure that you're not overcharged for items you've purchased, or even playing a game of Sudoku as a diversion from your responsibilities, you solve problems all the time.
Even organizing items involves mathematical principles, such as set theory. Humans often put things into sets. For example, you might have a special way of sorting your e-mail inbox or information reviewed online.
This week, you will learn about set theory and also hone your critical thinking skills, beginning with learning the formal definitions of two types of reasoning you are already using—inductive and deductive. You will "flex your math muscles" through pattern recognition, estimation, and solving critical thinking problems.
