Assignment Instructions/ Description
Intercultural/Interracial Communication: (3 pages minimum)
While this assignment is primarily dedicated to intercultural/interracial communication, the text encourages us to think more broadly about communicating across groups. Specifically, it introduces the concept of “coculture.” Earlier in the field of communication, this “cross group” communication was most often described in terms of dominant and subordinate cultures and subcultures. The new terminology provides opportunities to describe and experience communication events with a much wider lens.
This assignment focuses on interactions with others – specifically, those who are members of cocultures.
Read chapter 4 in the textbook.
2. Seek out opportunities to engage in conversation with 3 people, each of whom are members of one of the following groups – preferably someone not already known. Select people from 3 different groups:
At least 20 years older or younger than youA race different from your ownAn ethnicity different from your ownSomeone whose native language is different from your ownA member of a religion different from your own (Protestant religions are pretty similar)Someone with a physical difference/disabilityA member of a different socio-economic statusSomeone with a different sexual orientation or gender identitySomeone with a different group membership (examples: biker, different political party, goth, hippie, etc…)Another coculture that you can define for us
Write a synopsis of each interaction (approximately 1 page each) and then choose one encounter to write a longer reflection. The synopses can simply be descriptive, but for the longer reflection use the following concepts from the text as a guide for the longer reflection. (The reflection does not need to include all of them – but will cover at least 2 of the concepts below) The discussion will also cover what was learned from the encounter.
NOTE: To receive full credit for the assignment, you must directly cover at least 2 of the concepts below:
