Assignment Instructions/ Description
Practitioner Interview: The Practitioner Interviewer assignment comprises 10% of your course grade
and is due 11/7th online on Canvas by 11:00am. You will identify a health educator or health promotion
practitioner to interview by phone or in-person. I encourage you to identify someone that works in a
setting where you may want to work one day (e.g., clinic, school, non-profit, social service agency)
and/or someone working on issues that may interest you (e.g., smoking cessation, nutrition, mental
health, cancer prevention). I am happy to speak with you individually to help identify appropriate
interviewees.
The purpose of the interview is: 1) to understand why this person chose this career path, how they were
trained, and a bit about how they do their work, and 2) to help you get a sense of potential career
options. You should feel free to ask questions that support your professional development and may wish
to consider the following:
• What training did you pursue to become a community health educator?
• How does public health research inform your work?
• How do health behavior and education theories inform your work?
• What ethical considerations do you face in your work?
• What skills are most important for the work you do?
• What advice do you have for future health educators?
You may want to review profiles at ‘We are Public Health’ (http://wearepublichealthproject.org) to get
additional ideas for questions or discussion topics. After you complete the interview, you should prepare
a 2-3 page reflection paper discussing what you learned, generally, and how these lessons may relate to
your career plans (if applicable).
