Key Concept Exercise: Contingency versus situational theoryAccording to contingency theory, a leader’s success depends on how well the leader adapts to a given situation. Situational theory, developed by Hersey and Blanchard, posits that different situations require different kinds of leadership.While situational theory examines behaviours that leaders should adopt given situational factors, contingency theory looks at leadership according to three factors: leader-member relations, task structure, and position power. As a leader, how would you decide which theory to apply in a given situation?
