Discussion 1: Applying Mathematics
As this week's Introduction discussed, mathematical reasoning applies to many different real-life situations. In this Discussion, you will describe how mathematical skills and concepts apply to your everyday life and your field of study.
To prepare for this Discussion:
- Review the required Chapter 1 and 2 readings from the course text, Thinking Mathematically.
- Think about how you have used mathematical concepts throughout your life. In what areas do you apply mathematical concepts? In what way might knowledge of mathematical concepts help you in your life?
- Investigate how mathematics will apply in your academic program of choice.
Places to look:
- Review your program of study for coursework that may require knowledge of mathematical concepts. Review the course descriptions.
- Check the Walden Library. Look for articles or research studies from your chosen discipline.
- Conduct an Internet search. What keywords might you use to find materials related to your discipline and mathematics?
- Consider the types of math listed in the course text table of contents. How do some or many of these topics relate to areas of your life or discipline?
Post a 1- to 2-paragraph response that describes how mathematics applies to your life and your chosen program of study. Be sure to include specific examples.
Be sure to support your ideas by connecting them to the week's Learning Resources, or something you have read, heard, seen, or experienced.
Read a selection of your colleagues' postings.
By Day 5Respond to at least two of your colleagues' postings in one or more of the following ways:
- Ask a probing question.
- Share an insight from having read your colleague's posting.
- Offer and support an opinion.
- Validate an idea with your own experience.
- Make a suggestion.
- Expand on your colleague's posting.
Return to this Discussion in a few days to read the responses to your initial posting. Note what you have learned and/or any insights you have gained as a result of the comments your colleagues made.
