Assignment Instructions/ Description
Please reply to this students post that is below and reply with seven sentences about what they responded to the questions. Discuss all areas of the assignment.1) Do you believe that eating insects can sustain human life? Why or why not?Yes, I do believe that eating insects can sustain human life because the video, Should We All Be Eating Insects?, provided various benefits insects can provide. For example, one hundred grams of crickets provide a similar amount of protein as one hundred grams of chicken, beef, and pork. Not only that but crickets provide other benefits like higher contents of vitamins and minerals. Not only are there insects that are a great source of protein but also a great source of fiber as well. In other words, insects provide just as much or even more benefits than other sources of protein, vitamins, minerals, etc from other foods. It would also take less materials and resources to produce insects than to produce beef, chicken, and pork. Therefore, I find that eating insects can sustain human life.2) Would you eat insects? Explain in detail why or why not.I would only eat insects if it was made into cookies or any other way where I don't have to see the insect itself. I feel like I would be the type of person to get disgusted if I ate an insect in its original form. I've seen videos of people trying new things in different countries and I came across a video of a guy eating bugs and it did not look appetizing at all. So, if I were to ever try insects, it would be ideal to hide the insects in my food and if it tastes and smells appetizing. I think it also helps to know that insects are in everyday foods like peanut butter, spinach, beer, etc. So knowing that, it helps to think that it's not as odd as we think.3) What did you learn from the video? Explain in detail.I learned that insects provide a lot more healthy benefits than I thought. I never knew that insects can provide the same amount of protein content as other protein sources such as chicken, beef, and pork. Not only are bugs great sources of protein but also fiber, vitamins, etc. I also learned how much more helpful it would be for the environment if we consume more insects. The video, Should We All Be Eating Insects?, explains how 70 percent of our fresh water sources are used in farming. It can take about 22,000 liters of water to produce 1 kilogram of beef, but to produce one kilogram of crickets it only takes about 1 liter of water! This would be a very helpful way of saving water due to a study expecting a great decrease of fresh water by 2025.4) What other comments or ideas do you have regarding eating insects? Explain in detail. This question is not optional. (50 points)I think it would be a pretty good idea to put insects in baked goods, meals, or maybe even for protein powder, etc. I think it would be interesting to incorporate and normalize insects as a new source of protein. I think it would be best to keep it hidden in foods because some people like me don't like the idea of actually eating insects in its original form. Not only would it be beneficial for an individual's health, but it can also help the environment to save water and land. We wouldn't need a great amount of land to grow insects, as well as using a lot of water to produce it. Overall, I think it's an idea I'm open to try.
