Assignment Instructions/ Description
HIS 108John P. Davis Ph.D.ARGUMENTIVE/EVIDENTIARY ESSAY I Answer ONE (1) of the two questions listed below by writing an essay that responds to it. Make sure to include three points of argument that support your thesis (overall argument). Support them with evidence, examples and logic. Identify and refute any evidence that you encounter which tends to militate against your thesis.
- Choose three early American colonies, compare and contrast how they were different, and explain the distinct forces that distinguished them from one another. Which colony was most successful (you should define ‘successful’)? Make sure you choose colonies about which there is enough available information in our textbook and to make an overarching argument or thesis (main point) in your essay. Hint: Not only money and resources, but religion and culture will likely be very important to your argument.
- Beginning with the Reformation of the Catholic Church in the 16th century, explain the role that religion played in the settling and shaping of the Americas and/or the United States. Develop at least three points in support of your thesis and explain why they are/were important. Hint: You should pay close attention to the European colonial governments and management styles. Think about the role that religion played in shaping each empire or colony. DO NOT argue that one religion was superior to the others. We are interested only in how religion shaped history and vice versa, NOT which religion is correct and the others, incorrect.
Then write three well-developed paragraphs explaining each point and cite an example from the course readings or textbook in each one. Your paper should definitely indicate that you have read all of the course readings so you will want to include one or more of them. . Make sure you begin each paragraph with a good topic sentence to let the reader know what you will be saying.
***Also, just before your Conclusion, include a short paragraph identifying and explaining any contradicting evidence, that is, evidence which tends to militate against the accuracy of your thesis. How is this evidence incorrect and/or how does the evidence that you present supersede it?
Be sure to include a well-developed concluding paragraph that draws your thesis and supporting points together. The Conclusion should add emphasis to what you have written by connecting the dots in the analysis that you have already given in the Introduction and body.Record the author’s last name and cite the page numbers and each source from where you gathered your information.
