Assignment Instructions/ Description
Read the masterly and compelling critique of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by the greatest living American writer today, Toni Morrison. Annotate it. Afterwards, compose a -750-word essay that compares your reading of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn with Morrison’s reading of it. Consider the following questions while composing your essay:Are my most noteworthy and favorite parts of the book the same as Morrison’s? Does Morrison think about the scenes she mentions in the same way I do? Do I agree with the interpretation(s) she provides? Why or why not? (You must understand and state her interpretations to address this question satisfactorily.)Does Morrison leave out parts of Twain’s book that I was especially interested in?Does Morrison’s unique reading assist, complicate, challenge, and/or underscore my understanding of the book? How does Morrison’s treatment of Huck compare with Mr. Petersen’s?Through your comparison, you will have the opportunity to grapple with difficult ideas, refine your own comprehension, and reevaluate your feelings about the novel. When you are done with the essay, print it out and staple it to the back of this packet. Imagine that a literary essay is trying to come to grips with what you’ve read.
