Key Concept Exercise: Leaders and followersIf you think you're leading and no one is following you, then you're only taking a walk.—Afghan proverbThis simple quote defines the need for a relationship between leaders and followers. A good deal of research concentrates on that relationship. For example, according to leader-member exchange theory, leadership effectiveness is related to positive exchanges between leaders and followers. Path/goal theory posits that it is the leader's responsibility to provide their followers with all the information, support and resources necessary to achieve organisational goals and their personal objectives.
In this week’s Key Concept Exercise you will take a deeper look at the roles of the follower and leader and analyse the influence they have on each other.
